In May, Street Peace had the privilege of taking young men from both our Bendigo Nest Hub and Frankston Nest Hub on our very first Wilderhood Camp—an outdoor adventure designed to help disconnected and disengaged young people experience challenge, community, peace and belonging in nature.
For many of these young people, life can often feel like survival mode. Stepping away from everyday pressures and into the bush creates space for something different. Nature has a unique way of slowing life down, opening meaningful conversations, building resilience, restoring confidence and expanding young people's vision for their future.
A special thank you to Zorali, Functional Gear for Life Outdoors, for generously supporting the camp by gifting each participant an Escapade Backpack in Forest Night. These lightweight, durable and adventure-ready packs not only equipped our young people for the journey ahead but also communicated something deeper—that they are seen, valued and worth investing in.
A Vision Brought to Life
Street Peace Founder, Jay Shelling, described Wilderhood as the fulfilment of a long-held vision.
"Wilderhood was the reality of a dream and vision I've carried for a long time. Throughout my life, both personally and through working with young people, I've seen the power of unplugging, getting into nature and reconnecting. There's something deeply healing about it. It resets us."
With support from Brock and the Bendigo team, the inaugural camp quickly created opportunities for deeper conversations, vulnerability and trust.
"Hiking, camping and shared challenge accelerate connection in a powerful way," Jay said.
The camp centred around the theme of being a man of your word—following through on commitments and building integrity through action. From cold plunges in rivers to climbing Sugarloaf Peak through caves and rugged terrain, young people and mentors encouraged, supported and challenged one another every step of the way.
"It was inspiring to watch mentors and young people carry each other through difficult moments and celebrate each other's victories," Jay reflected.
As Street Peace continues to create opportunities for young people to discover purpose, hope and belonging, Wilderhood represents an exciting new pathway for transformation—one adventure at a time.
Thank you to everyone who helped make this experience possible and for investing in the next generation.
